Mānawatia a Matariki

Mānawatia a Matariki

Mānawatia a Matariki, everyone!

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades or Seven Sisters. These stars pop up in midwinter and traditionally, they were used to determine how the crops would do in the coming seasons. Festivities would include feasts and fire lighting rituals but, nowadays Matariki marks the start of the Māori New Year. We celebrate it by gathering with friends and whānau to share food, stories, and music, honouring our loved ones who are no longer with us, appreciating the present and looking toward the future.

We're all looking forward to celebrating Matariki with our families, and hope you all have a lovely and safe long weekend too. We'll be back on Monday with our cups full and ready to action any orders placed over the long weekend.

 Happy Matariki! ✨
